ABOUT THE NELLY

A proper local, with plenty of character.

Independent, community-minded and just a little bit nautical. The Nelson Arms is the sort of pub built around good beer, good food and people actually talking to one another.

THE STORY

The Nelly, as it is now.

The Nelson Arms reopened in May 2018 and has been rejuvenated under the stewardship of Matt and Emma. Since then it has become known well beyond Tonbridge for an adventurous drinks range, well-kept cask ale, real cider, good-value pub food and a warm welcome.

It is still very much a neighbourhood pub: a place for regulars, visitors, dogs, sport, Sunday lunch, live music and the occasional conversation that lasts rather longer than planned.

WHAT MATTERS HERE

No complicated manifesto required.

Independent

As a free house, the bar is free to be interesting — with changing cask, keg and cider rather than a dictated line-up.

Welcoming

A proper local should work for regulars and first-timers alike. Come for a pint, dinner, the quiz or simply somewhere comfortable to sit.

Community-minded

Music, sport, quizzes, food nights and familiar faces all form part of the pub’s rhythm rather than feeling bolted on.

THE NAUTICAL STREAK

Nelson by name, Nelson by nature.

The nautical theme runs through the pub, right down to the room names: the Nelson Saloon, Trafalgar Snug, Hardy’s Public Bar and Victory Sports Bar.

Outside, there is also a beer terrace with TVs and heating — useful when the British weather remembers what it is famous for.
